I would like to think that this was one of my biggest stories which actually did some good.
We got a call that a girl was on her death bed because she had a heart virus and she only had hours to live.
Her name, Sally Slater, will forever be recorded in history because she received a donor organ at the 11th hour and the operation was a success.
I shot a photo of her in intensive care through a door and it went national. It was initially used by the local papers before being picked up by the nationals including the Express, the Daily Telegraph, the Guardian, the Mirror, the Independent (when it was still a print newspaper), the Sun, and the Daily Sport.
A donor heart was found with hours to spare and the operation was a success. It turned out that an ambulance service in Scunthorpe transported the organ.
I would like to think that publication of my photos helped raise awareness of the importance of organ donation and helped find a donor organ.
However I do remember my boss being most pissed off when the people controlling the media coverage of the operation gave media access to PA when we had raised awareness in the first place.
From various newspapers in 2000.
