Fast forward a year and a bit and then the route of the Olympic Torch Relay was revealed…
6,000 expected to welcome flame at 2012-inspired Open Air Theatre event
Preparations are well underway for next month’s arrival in Scarborough of the Olympic Torch during its relay around the UK.
It will travel from Hinderwell in the north of the borough to Filey in the south and already communities are getting ready to welcome the Olympic Flame.
A London 2012 inspired celebration event will be staged at Scarborough Open Air Theatre, where around 6000 people will welcome the Olympic Torch.
Entertainment will be staged in three parts including an international cultural theme, a sporting theme and a youth theme.
The Rotunda Museum celebration event will feature a local steel band, who will be playing on the balcony to help create a carnival-type atmosphere as the Olympic Torch passes by.
Cllr Derek Bastiman, Scarborough Council’s lead councillor for London 2012 inspired events, said: “There is definitely a sense of excitement in the air now that we only have a few weeks to go until the Olympic Torch arrives in our borough.
“This enthusiasm has grown since the flame started its journey around the UK and our communities are getting into the party spirit as they firm up their plans to celebrate in style and mark this once in a lifetime event.
“We are very lucky that our borough will be the first part of Yorkshire to welcome the flame and I am confident that in trueYorkshire style we will give the flame and the torch-bearers an unforgettable welcome.”
Thousands of spectators are expected to line the route to catch a glimpse of the flame as it passes.
They will also help to celebrate the achievements of the torchbearers carrying it through six areas of the borough.
