Following on from my recollection of photographing John Peel when I was at college in Sheffield and I remembered this photo shoot from early November 1991.
One of my fellow journalism students was in a relationship with a guy who worked as a focus puller with film crews and he was actually working on a video shoot with the Happy Mondays and they needed a photographer to shoot some stills.
I headed off on the train to Stockport, near Manchester, and the whole crew was there. I shot a few frames as they were setting up but then the heavens opened – it was so heavy that my camera bag ended up soaked through.
Having said that the weather conditions added to the overall look and atmosphere of the finished video. Watch it here.
The location on the first day had the Stockport Pyramid, otherwise known as the Co-operative Bank Pyramid, as the backdrop and the band were performing along to the song Judge Fudge on top of a shipping container.
Its storyline depicted a heist of a building’s safe and the final exterior shots which were filmed that day showed the band cutting padlock chains to break in.
On the second day we moved to Factory Records, the band’s label, in the centre of Manchester for the interior scenes such as them using cutting equipment to get into the safe as well as solo shots of singer Shaun Ryder. As well as meeting the band I did get to meet Factory boss Tony Wilson on that day.
On the down side one of my cameras slipped from my shoulder and clattered to the ground with a loud crash. It could have been worse as the only damage was the front of my 35mm lens which was dented and could no longer have a filter attached to it. That will teach me to always have a UV or skylight filter on all of my lenses for protection.
In the end the photos were never published and this is the first time I have really shared them.
