I had a wee drive out to the Penrith area today to shoot a few pics so I visited Mayburgh Henge, Brougham Castle and Brougham Hall.
I first visited the hall back when I was working at the Cumberland & Westmorland Herald, which is based in Penrith, and I actually did a double take when I saw the door knocker on one of its doors because it looked just like the Sanctuary knocker at Durham Cathedral in the north east of England.
Apparently, according to the hall’s website, there are four examples of this 12th century design – two in Durham and two in Brougham – and it was believed that sanctuary in the Cathedral was assured to any fugitive who grasped the ring.
Having said that it was nice to revisit the site today, as well as the other places, to see it once more.
