During the spring of 2019 my friend and guitarist, and general creative, Troy Slater asked me if I was interested in shooting some photos of a couple of video shoots by his band Trojan Dogs. Of course I was interested and it turned out that the first day made for better pictures. Unfortunately the second day they were using green screen which did not make for an interesting background.
The location chosen for the first day was a former industrial unit and the band played There Goes A Legend there. I liked the stripped back minimalist look of the surroundings and the lighting was good.
I wanted to get a band shot and used the video lighting to improvise the shot above which I reckon worked quite well. Here are a few others from the day:
The second day’s shoot was for the track Oblivion Is Freedom which was in a local community centre but as I have said the green screens made for a disappointing background.
It took a couple of years for the videos to be released but I think the end result on There Goes A Legend looks quite good. Not sure why I could not find a proper video for Oblivion Is Freedom.
The band were helped by media students from Carlisle during the shoot and I reckon the results are pretty good. And because my camera gear looks retro and, it could be mistaken for a film camera, there was a bit of interest in the kit I was using.
On a sad note guitarist Mike Alexander died a few of years back in a road traffic collision but I would like to think that his work on these two tracks will form part of his legacy. I feel quite privileged that he used one of my shots from the first day as his Facebook profile picture.
