In July 1990 I had just started smuggling my camera into gigs when I first saw a performance by The Almighty. The Glaswegian rockers were promoting their first album and I am guessing the staff at The Riverside, in Newcastle, were pretty cool about me taking a few shots as I managed to get a few photos.
It was basically two rolls film, 72 shots on black and white film, which at the time was cutting edge Kodak Tmax 3200, and it produced pleasing results in low light conditions rated at 3200 ASA.

I got this shot of frontman Ricky Warwick which was in the portfolio that ultimately got me onto the NCTJ photojournalism course in Sheffield the following year.
Having said that when I heard Ricky was due to perform in Carlisle with his current band The Fighting Hearts I thought it would be interesting to recreate that shot and let’s just say there were plenty of opportunities to do just that.
So the criteria was that he should be yelling into the mic and have both hands on his guitar but I reckon the first image fulfils that.

After the show, when I showed him the pic from 1990, he said he remembered the gig and it was good to see he took the time to speak with fans.
It was good to also chat with CJ Wilheart, whose band was supporting the headliners, and overall it was a decent gig.
