At the weekend I recreated another photograph, this time from just two years ago, when I took a trip to Hexham Abbey for the GAIA art installation.

Basically it was a large recreation of the Earth which was suspended inside the building by renowned artist Luke Jerram which followed his previous installation in 2023 entitled Museum of the Moon.

GAIA is the latest in a series of extraordinary large-scale sculptures by Luke Jerram and it is an equally spectacular and thought-provoking experience.

It was described as a chance to see our planet from a whole new perspective. I measured six metres in diameter and was created from 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface – the artwork provided the opportunity to see our planet, floating in three dimensions.

The illuminated globe was suspended from the abbey bell tower and slowly revolved in mid-air. There was what described as a powerful surround-sound composition and it is on display for the next six weeks. For more information visit the Hexham Abbey website.

If I am being honest my camera kit, and by default me, struggled with the low light two years ago and I have since replaced it. So most of the shots in 2023 were taken on my phone. Having said that the new kit gave me better results so most of the shots were taken on the new Sony kit. Having said that a couple of this year’s shots were still taken on the phone.

I have to admit I was quite impressed with the exhibit and it brought things into perspective seeing the planet which we call home represented in detailed NASA imagery. And it perfectly complemented the earlier Museum of the Moon installation.
