AFTERMATH… Residents in Eamont Bridge clear up the mess after Storm Desmond hit Cumbria in December 2015…

Last week marked the tenth anniversary of the Storm Desmond in 2015 which also marked the started its aftermath which lasted for years.

And, as you would expect, the various Cumbrian media outlets have been reminding readers and viewers of their coverage of it of which I count myself as one of the journalists with my boots on the ground.

It was described as one of the worst flooding events to hit Cumbria and at the time I was with the Penrith-based Cumberland & Westmorland Herald when the storm hit during that fateful weekend in early December 2015.

Needless to say when I turned in for work on the Monday I was sent out to cover the clean up operation in the village Eamont Bridge and it was good to see how the community had pulled together to try and return back to normal.

I also visited Pooley Bridge (where the bridge which the village was named after was swept away) as well as a Government minister visited to see how the community response was helping the people in Appleby.

Over the next few years I covered the story by visiting various public meetings and I also visited the Lakeland village of Glenridding, which was also badly hit, six months after the event to see how the community was coping with the aftermath as residents tried to return to normality.

But the most memorable event for me was when a temporary replacement for the crossing in Pooley Bridge was installed and effectively reconnected both sides of the village and it received a huge cheers from residents when it was put in place. It was later replaced with a state-of-the-art design which is a lot more modern than the original which was washed away.

At the time I felt it was important to record the aftermath so see below for a few of my articles from the time:
