Bizarrely my top tip of gig photography failed as I thought I was photographing the setlist of the headliners when actually it was the songs sung by the support act which had fallen into the photographers’ pit. But luckily my news editor, who is a big fan and was reviewing the gig, managed to get it and I have included it at the end of this post.
I can remember when Kula Shaker burst onto the music scene in the mid to late 1990s, at the height of Brit Pop, most notably for their cover of the track Hush which was written by American composer and musician Joe South, for recording artist Billy Joe Royal, but later covered by British heavy rock band Deep Purple.
But then they disappeared off my musical radar. Having said that they have continued producing albums upto the present day – in fact this month’s appearance wasn’t billed as a gig but as a promotional event ahead of next year’s release of their next album entitled Wormslayer together with a full tour early in 2026.
Of course the pub quiz answer about band is that lead guitarist and singer Crispian Mills is the son of actress Hayley Mills and director Roy Boulting as well as the grandson of Sir John Mills.
Having said I was suitably impressed by his guitar sound and the bands own unique brand of psychedelic rock and roll as well as the depth of the band’s back catalogue and the strength of their songwriting.
