I was enjoying a quiet pint with a mate in Carlisle on Saturday when a group, who had pre-booked a table turned up for a meal. After eating they unpacked their musical instruments and started to perform a few songs.
It turns out they were members of The Taborers Society who make music using three-holed pipes, which is similar to a recorder but with fewer holes and it is held played with one hand, and tabors, which are drums which are beaten with a stick which is held in the free hand for the rhythm.
Let’s just say it was an unexpected surprise and the atmosphere in The Sportsman Inn in Carlisle took on a medieval feel. It turned out that they were visiting the city for a performance in Carlisle Cathedral.
I got chatting with one woman, while grabbing these shots, who had travelled all the way from Seattle in the United States of America to join fellow members for their trip to the Border Capital.
