Not quite the last gig by Oasis

I recently rewatched the film Oasis: Supersonic and the main thing that came across was sibling rivalry and tensions between Noel and Liam Gallagher within the band.

I do remember back in 1994 there was a lot of excitement about the then emerging band Oasis which was fronted by the Gallagher brothers – they were full of northern swagger and the self confidence that goes with it.

When I heard their debut album I was suitably impressed although I was less convinced by the rivalry generated by the marketing bods with the band and fellow Brit Pop band Blur but, having said that, it did succeed in generating loads of record sales.

By 1997 the band were massive and were touring to promote their third album – Be Here Now – and were due to play at Newcastle Arena. I managed to get a photo pass for the first gig with the help of the picture editor of the Northern Echo.

My photos were used by that paper and, as the Independent On Sunday who had a reporter reviewing the gig, in that publication also.

ALMOST THE LAST GIG… Liam and Noel Gallagher on stage at the Bridlington Spa…

Fast forward 12 years to August 20, 2009, and the band were a few albums down the line and they were touring to promote Dig Out Your Soul with an appearance at Bridlington Spa.

I was working at the Scarborough Evening News and a few us were attending the gig and I was doing the photos.

Tensions within the band, particularly between the brothers, were clear and the reporter writing the review noticed a lack of interaction between the Gallaghers as they were virtually on opposite sides of the stage and about as far apart as was possible.

Having said that the proverbial well and truly hit the fan just a few days later, on August 28, the band imploded when as they were preparing to go on stage in Paris and an argument broke out between the brothers.

Apparently Liam was wielding Noel’s guitar around “like an axe” and Noel later released a statement saying: “It’s with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.”

I have admit that it was good to catch their almost final show and who could have predicted that it all would have ended just over a week later.
