BRAILLE BINGO… A blind woman is included in the session at day centre in South Shields in November 1990…

When I was building my portfolio in the early 1990s I thought a local day centre, which was run by a friend’s mother, might make for some interesting photos.

Obviously what struck me was that a blind woman was able to take part in the game of bingo by playing a braille version. And I think a couple the shots from my visit in November 1990 may have been included in my portfolio that I took to my successful interview for the NCTJ photojournalism course in Sheffield in late 1991.

What I liked during my visit was the interaction between the staff and the residents which obviously showed that they really cared for the people who attended the session.

During my visit I documented the various activities at the centre including: dominos; card games; dancing; a raffle; and the preparations in the kitchen for lunch.

For the record was shooting with two cameras loaded Kodak Tri-X and Fuji transparency film. But I was quite pleased with the whole shoot at the end of the day.
