Way back in 2003 I was suitably impressed with the original Xbox and especially Medal of Honor Frontline which effectively placed you in the centre of the action of the D-Day beaches in June 1944. After some bad advice from a friend I bought the original Xbox. But I remember being suitably impressed by the quality of the graphics of the game and it was so immersive by placing you in the centre of the action.

Having said that when I got together with the future Mrs D she had a PlayStation 2 console and, after some constructive discussions, we decided to go down the PlayStation route and I sold my Xbox.

We went on to buy PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 consoles and I added a PlayStation 5 console a few years back. Having said that I have become increasingly dissatisfied with the direction games were taking in recent years. It would appear that games have turned towards squeezing every last penny out of your bank account and the biggest offender was Call Of Duty with its ridiculous micro payments and stupid Nicki Minaj and Beavis and Butthead skins.

That is the main reason I did not buy the last Call of Duty release last year because it was far removed from being the military shooter I wanted and I much preferred Battlefield 6 as it removed from the Call of Duty nonsense and it gave me more realism.

Having said that recently Sony has announced that in a few years physical copies of the games will no longer be an option. The multi-billion dollar corporation has taken the decision because it is claimed more people bought games in a digital format rather than owning the actual disc but the actual stats show more people actually bought a physical copy of the game. And when the PS5 was released more people bought consoles with a disc drive rather than one not having one. When I bought my PS5 I bought it with a disc drive purely because I preferred owning a physical copy of the game.

Having said that, under Sony’s terms and conditions, if a PlayStation account is inactive for three years then Sony can close the account which denies users access to the content that they have legally bought the files which is effectively theft if you miss the email reminder but they justify it because it is a licensing issue.

Having said that I am not sure that denying fans the chance to own a physical copy of game that they could keep or sell once they had played is not the way forward.

It will decimate the second hand market and increase the chance of you losing something you have already bought. Basically it is a cynical corporate business decision. Basically Sony does not have to produce a physical product but I am uncomfortable with the way games are going. I feel I need to explore games from previous consoles as I have been rewatching old gameplay videos.

I have watched Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2 gameplay as well as LA Noire. So maybe my plan should be to buy as many old games that I want to replay but then again I might buy the new Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 because it looks quite good. But having said after that that I will probably go totally retro and not buy a PS6.
