Yesterday (Saturday, August 22) I ventured down to Geil Park in the Wath Brow area of Cleator Moor in west Cumbria for the first time since early July to see Wath Brow Hornets host Waterhead Warriors in the National Premier Rugby League.

The reason why it had been so long since my last visit were basically that there were no home matches at that level and I have not yet got games featuring the A squad which is the next level down.

I arrived early and I asked the guys on the game what Waterhead were like and I was told they were pretty good and were currently second in the league compared with Wath Brow’s sixth position with two games in hand.

As it turned out the game was a little one sided with the action taking place at the opposite end of the pitch and the end result, according to the club’s WhatsApp chat, was 18-34 in favour of the visitors. having said that Wath Brow made a decent fight back in the second half which unfortunately was not enough in the end.

Report by Wath Brow Hornets RLFC:

Waterhead Warriors completed a double over Wath Brow in the National League’s Premier Division underlining how much Hornets coach Ian Rooney rates them.

It had been 60-10 in Oldham and in the return at Giel Park they led 20-6 at the break.

But the young Hornets side gave as good as they got in the second half and the game finished 34-18 to the visitors.

Jake Moore (2) and Nat Dougan scored the Brow tries with Sam Curwen adding three goals.

Hornets are sixth in the table, in the final play-off position but have two games in hand of the five teams ahead of them.

The first of those comes up on Saturday at relegation-threatened Heworth and their other game, also away, is at York Acorn.

They are also fighting the drop a point better off than Heworth.
